James Arthur Thompson, Sr.

James Arthur Thompson, Sr., age 74, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at Morgan Medical Center in Madison, GA. Born on July 18, 1951, in Greensboro, he was the son of the late Rowland Alexander Thompson and Willie Rebecca Poss Thompson Meek. Growing up in Greensboro, he attended Greene County Schools and worked as a truck driver for Oconee Sand and Gravel. James was known as a great mechanic who could fix anything, and he had a particular fondness for Farmall tractors. He was often found in his yard, working on a project.

A devoted family man, he was a hero to his children and always emphasized the importance of loving one another, getting along, and being right with the Lord. Always treat your mama good no matter what.

He is survived by his children: daughters Sharon Thompson of Penfield, GA, and Leann Holcomb (R. J.) of Greensboro, GA; sons James Arthur “Jamie” Thompson, Jr. Penfield, Ga, Jason Thompson (Cindy) of Alma, GA, and Robert Thompson (DenaMarie) of Crawford, GA. He is also survived by his sister, Dodie Hodge of Pangburn, AR, and brothers Aubrey Meek (Lisa) of West Virginia and David Meek of Siloam, GA.

James was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren—Jacob Lindsey, Elijah Lindsey, Sr., Nathaniel McDaniel, James “Jay” Thompson, III, Issac McDaniel, Karrie Thompson, Harley Holcomb, AnnaMarie Thompson, Alyssa Vandiver, Robert “Robbie” Thompson, Gracie Holcomb, Rolan Holcomb, Chasity Weaver, Matthew Thompson, Kamie Johnson, and Dewey “DJ” Johnson—and 18 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends and his beloved dog, Dozier. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Richard James Holcomb, Jr. and his brothers, William Alexander “Andy” Thompson and Stephen Michael “Mike” Thompson.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at McCommons Chapel, Greensboro, with Rev. Ron Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Woodville Cemetery, 1191 Peachtree Avenue E., Woodville, GA 30669. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, December 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Serving as pallbearers will be Jamie Thompson, Jason Thompson, Robert Thompson, Elijah Lindsey, Sr., Elijah Lindsey, Jr. Jacob Lindsey, Kevin Poss, Josh Thompson, and Dusty Star.
