James Russell Thompson, age 88, of Penfield, GA, died Friday, October 27, 2006 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born August 19, 1918 to the late James A. Thompson and Effie Eufalla Patrick Thompson. After graduating from Greensboro High School in 1937, he joined Civilian Conservation Camp for two years before joining the United States Navy. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After twenty plus years of service in the Navy, he retired and joined the Penfield Post Office as a rural mail carrier for twelve years. On January 2, 1969 he married Equilla Lovell with whom he spent thirty-seven years of marriage. Mr. Thompson was a member of Penfield Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Equilla Lovell Thompson, of Penfield, GA; a sister, Ella Louise Moss of Athens, GA; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Byron Everett Thompson.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Penfield Baptist Church with the Rev. David Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Penfield Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are John Colclough, Sam Patrick, Aren Waters, Joshua Waters, Daniel Waters and Wayne Usry. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Burt, Curtis Whitaker and William Poole. The family requests that any memorials be made to Penfield Baptist Church, c/o Curtis Whitaker, 1211 Cemetery Road, Penfield, GA 30669.
