James Carpenter Obituary

James Melvin “Jim” Carpenter of Union Point, Georgia passed away May 5th, 2026. Jim was born January 4th, 1946 the only child of the late William Paul Carpenter, Sr & Minnie Lee “Millie (Batson) in Cornelia, Georgia. He is preceded in death by brothers Glover Lee Carpenter (Elouise Loudermilk), John Clifford Carpenter (Marjorie Chapman), William Paul “Bill” Carpenter, Jr. (Della, Virginia), Phillip Carpenter and sisters Dorothy Jean Bramlett (Nelson), Mary Louise Sanders and Marie Carpenter.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Joan (Bostwick), his daughter, Leanne Woods (Derrick) of Greensboro, Georgia, granddaughter, Sarah Jewell Porter of Athens, Georgia, his sister (in-law), Jane Chambers Bostwick as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim attended elementary school at Cornelia Elementary in Habersham County before moving to Miami where he attended Miami Edison Junior High. He moved to Morgan County, Georgia and graduated from Morgan County High School in 1963 where he and Joan began dating just 2 months before graduating. After high school, he attended and graduated from Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He went on to attend the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and obtained his degree in 1969.

Jim and Joan were married in Bostwick, Georgia at the Bostwick Methodist Church on June 6, 1967. They moved to Athens, Georgia briefly before settling down in Union Point. Jim went on to work with pharmacist John L. Kimbrough and bought Union Pharmacy in 1971 where he worked, faithfully serving his community and helping others for over 50 years until his retirement in 2022 when he sold the business and building to Liddy (Cronan) Smith and partners.

Jim loved watching scary movies, Britcoms, sitcoms and history shows, but he loved sports even more. Especially when his son-in-law, Derrick was there watching with him cheering on the Dawgs or their favorite boxer. He also enjoyed swapping jokes with his granddaughter’s father, Zachary Porter. In his younger years he enjoyed bottle hunting and collecting as anyone whoever visited Union Pharmacy would know. He also loved playing his guitar at home and in the Methodist Church in Union Point. His happiest days, however, were the days his daughter and granddaughter were born.
