Jack was born August 12, 1938, in the Philippines, the first of three sons of the late Col. Frank and Barbara Elder. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in 1960 from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, he proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Afterwards, Jack continued his education at George Washington University earning his Master’s Degree in Information Technology. He enjoyed a 30-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency as a Logistics Officer with exciting foreign posts in Thailand, France, and Greece.

In June of 1968, Jack married Julie Bland whom he met at Ft. Benning, GA. They raised their family in both Reston and Herndon, VA, where Jack spent many happy hours with family and friends. He enjoyed his favorite hobbies transcribing music and building model trains and circuses. However, his most beloved pastime was leading the New Hots Jazz Orchestra, which he founded in the early 1990s. They became a prominent fixture of the suburban DC ragtime music scene for 25 years and enjoyed playing multiple tours of Europe and New Zealand. In 2008, after 40 years in Northern Virginia, Jack and Julie retired to the Del Webb community at Lake Oconee, GA.
