Imogene "Jean" (Gipson) Watkins

Ida Imogene "Jean" Gipson Watkins, a beloved resident of Siloam, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the age of 98. She died peacefully at High Shoals Health & Rehab in Bishop, Georgia. Born on December 4, 1927, in Nicholson, Georgia, Jean was the daughter of the late Tarsus Duncan Gipson and Leona Baird Gipson. After completing her education, she married Roney Watkins on June 5, 1947. Jean was a dedicated employee, working as a knitter for Chipman Union in Union Point for fifty years. A woman of faith, she was a loyal member of Siloam Baptist Church in Siloam, Georgia, as long as her health allowed. She also enjoyed giving back to her community by serving as a Pink Lady at Minnie G. Boswell Hospital. For many years, she maintained the Siloam Cemetery by mowing the grass and ensuring it remained tidy. In her free time, Jean found pleasure in reading and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roney Bristol Watkins; her son, Terry Watkins; and all of her siblings: sisters Lucille Garrett, Lois Phillips, Bertie Mae Dockery, and Ruth Lee Nunn; and brothers Max Gipson, Howard Gipson, Dennis Gipson, and Horace Gipson.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Barbara Overton, and her husband, David, of Eatonton, Georgia. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Wade Overton (Kenly), Dixie Overton Jenkins, Amy Watkins, and Wendy Smith (Will). Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Liam Smith, Emily Burks (Stefon), Abbie Lea (Clinton), Jessie Jenkins, Blake Overton, and great, great grandchildren, Braxton Burks, and Eli Lea. She is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Siloam Baptist Church. Reverend Tracy Gipson and Reverend James Bowen will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church for a visitation from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Blake Overton, Wade Overton, Will Smith, Liam Smith, Dean Allen, and Clinton Lea. Interment will follow the service at Siloam Cemetery, Church Street, Siloam, Georgia 30665.  McCommons Funeral Home, located at 109 W.
