Horace Gary Harwell, Sr. of Greensboro, GA, died on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at his residence at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Greensboro, GA, he was born on February 29, 1931 to the late Howard Horace Harwell and Clyde Kathleen Steele Harwell. Mr. Harwell was a high school graduate of Greensboro High School in the class of 1948 and also graduated from Embry Riddle School of Aviation in Miami, FL in 1951. He attended Aircraft Engine School in Chanute Field Rantoul, IL in 1951 and ICS in Scranton, PA for Highway Engineering from 1958-1961. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955. He was the Transportation Engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation and retired in February of 1984 after thirty years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro where he served as treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the Georgia DOT Engineers Association, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Horace enjoyed bowling and radio remote control air planes. In his later years, one of his favorite pastimes was riding in his red Mustang convertible.
He is survived by a daughter, Margie Kathleen “Kathy” Ivey and husband James of Rockledge, GA; brother Robert H. Harwell and wife Elsie of Greensboro, GA; grandchildren, Jennifer Branyan and husband Pat of Woodville, GA and John Harwell of North Carolina; great grandchild, Parker Branyan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lou Ellen Harwell and his second wife, Lucretia F. Harwell; a son, Horace G. Harwell, Jr.; grandson, Trey Harwell; sisters, Lillian Stowe and Florrie Neff.
Graveside Services will be held Monday, October 12, 2020 at Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Hugh Hendrickson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers are Gary Usry, Scott Baynes, Keith Moody, Mike Herrington and David Kopp. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorials be made to American Cancer Society, 105 Westpark Drive, Athens, GA 30606.
