Heather Nicholas Obituary

Heather Marie Nicholas, age 34, of White Plains, GA, died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with brain cancer for two and a half years. Heather was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on April 26, 1977 to Gary Merle Nicholas and Marsha Deann Smith Nicholas. She graduated from Lakeside High School in Evans, GA in 1995 and the University of Evansville in Evansville Indiana in 1999 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education. After graduation she made her home in Evansville and for ten years taught at Culver Elementary School. She was a member of Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville IN, where she was the senior high youth leader for 12 years. She also enjoyed crafting, animals and being a summer camp youth counselor. For the past year she enjoyed driving horse drawn carriages at Driving Magic, Inc., which is a non-profit organization providing therapeutic horse driving activities for children and adults with disabilities. Heather thoroughly enjoyed her time doing this.

She is survived by her parents. Rev. Gary Nicholas and Marsha Smith Nicholas of White Plains, GA; a brother, Andrew Merle Nicholas and wife Mary Helen of Wichita, KS; niece and nephew, Haylee Nicholas and Austin Nicholas; maternal grandmother, Anna Jane Smith of Schoolcraft, MI; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lewis Charles Smith and her paternal grandparents, Merle and Nancy Nicholas.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Interment will follow in the Siloam Cemetery, Church Street, Siloam, GA. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time for the service Wednesday at McCommons Funeral Home in the historic Hall-Thomas House. Serving as pallbearers are Wes Parrish, Ken Larmore, Wayne Barron, Bob Working, and Marty Dyess. The family requests that any memorials be made to Driving Magic, Inc., P. O.
