Guy Richard Smith

Guy Richard Smith, age 87, of Greensboro, GA died Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee in Greensboro.  Born in Greene County on October 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Walter Benjamin Smith, Sr. and Meda Strickland Smith.

Richard attended school at Meadowcrest and later received his GED from Madison.  He served in the U.S. Air Force from September of 1954 through February of 1958.  On January 31, 1959 he married the former Jessie Ann Lindsey of Greensboro, GA.  After he married he worked for Maddox Feed Company and at night for Mary Leila Cotton Mills.  Later he began a thirty-six year career with Georgia Kraft and Mead Coated Board running the Seed Orchard as a tree improvement technician retiring in 1996.  During his working career he also worked part time for Henson Furniture Company, Greenview Cemetery and McCommons Funeral Home.  He was a lifelong and faithful member of Liberty United Methodist Church where he served in numerous capacities.  He was a Trustee, served as Assistant Superintendent and served on the Finance Committee as well as head of the Cemetery Committee.  Whenever there was a need, great or small, Richard could always be counted on to do his share and more.  He loved his vegetable gardens and always had plenty to share with neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Rick McKinley; four brothers, Junior Smith, Billy Smith, Reese Smith, and Bobby Smith; and sister, Frances “Polly” Lanier. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Ann Smith of Greensboro, GA; three children: Cindy Edmonds (Jimmy) of Greensboro, GA, Lane Smith (Robin) of the Liberty Community and Dede Smith of Greensboro, GA; three grandchildren: Adam McKinley (Brooke) of Madison, GA, Jonathan Moon (Anna) of Greensboro, GA and Tiffany Lindsey (William Garrard) of Stephens, GA; great-grandchildren, Colton Lindsey, Gradon Lindsey, Kylie Vining, and Gunner Moon; sister, Beth Williams; his friend and caregiver, Mary Williams; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3091 Liberty Church Road, White Plains, GA with Rev. Tom Compton officiating.  Serving as pallbearers are nephews: Martin Smith, Mike Smith, Steve Lanier, Ben Lanier, Morgan Lanier, Tom Williams, Scott Williams, Jeff Smith, Keith Lindsey, Dee Lindsey, Ken West and Chris West.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in Richard’s memory to Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Linda Bone, 305 West Greene Street, Greensboro, GA 30642.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
