Gene Tunis Askew of Eatonton, Georgia, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Greene Point Health Care and Rehabilitation in Union Point, GA. Gene was 79. Born in Greensboro, GA on June 29, 1943, he was the son of the late Charles Wover and Edna Patrick Askew. On May 29, 1962, Gene graduated from Greensboro High School and on May 9, 1974, he married the former Sarah Onita Branyan. From 1962 until 1972 he worked for Colonial Stores and from 1972 until 2020, he was the owner and cook of Lakeview Restaurant. Lakeview was known for having the best catfish and shrimp. He was Fire Chief for both Harmony Volunteer Fire Department and Putnam County Fire Department. Gene served his country in the United States Army National Guard. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and spending time with family and friends camping.
Survivors include a son, Butch Ellis (Laurie) of Eatonton, GA; two daughters, Connie Cluff (Randy) of Eatonton, GA and Tina Sisson (Wayne) of Greensboro, GA; grandchildren, Shani Ellis (Tommy), Sean Ellis (Kaitlin), Amanda Churchwell (Dustin), and Hope Beasley (Danny); eight great grandchildren, Chance: Tucker, Kyle, Kaylee, Harper, Graham, Brantley and Brody; sisters, Brenda Askew and Christine Hallman; and a brother Mike Askew along with many other relatives and many, many friends. In addition to his wife Nita Askew, he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna Askew; and a brother, Edward Askew.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel 109 West Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Mark Jones and Rev. Ron Hess officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642. Serving as pallbearers are Wesley Dunn, Randy Cribbs, Wayne Sisson, Danny Beasley, David Beasley, and Dustin Churchwell. Serving as honorary pallbearers are members of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department and the Putnam County Fire Department, Johnny Lewis and Horace Askew.
