Gary Van Hemert Obituary

Gary Allan Van Hemert of Greensboro, GA passed away on October 28, 2020 at the age of 77. Gary was born in Bremerton, WA on September 16, 1943 to the late Milton Francis “Buzz” Van Hemert and Helen Dora Hansen Van Hemert (Cohen). He graduated from Ballard High School in Seattle, WA in the class of 1961 and received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. On September 4, 1964 he married Margaret (Peggy) Ann Hawe.  He was the Manager of Computing Services for Rocket Research,  Vice President of IT for NPR Insurance, Manager of Systems at Honeywell and the State of Maine retiring in 1998.  In 1999 they moved to their home on Lake Oconee in Greensboro, GA.  Gary was very active with Greene County Habitat for Humanity both at the building sites, mentoring new homeowners and was Volunteer of the Year in 2019.  Boating, cooking, humming birds and woodworking were some of his favorite things to do along with frequent wine tasting trips to Washington and Oregon.

Gary is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Margaret (Peggy) Van Hemert of Greensboro, GA; his daughters Michelle Van Hemert Branton (Jeff) of Hartwell, GA and Daniele Van Hemert Lord (Jimmy) of Marietta, GA; sister, Marge Van Hemert of San Diego, CA; brother, Dan Van Hemert of Olympia, WA; grandchildren, Taylor Branton, Olivia Lord and Allie Lord; other relatives, many friends and Griffin.
