Fredena (Martin) Torbert

Fredena Martin Torbert known by friends and family as “Freddie” of Decatur, GA formerly of Greensboro, died Monday, November 28, 2022 at Medlock Gardens in Decatur, GA at the age of 94.  Born in Sparta, GA on November 16, 1928, she was the youngest of three daughters of the late William Fred Martin and Lena Adams Martin. She was a graduate of Union Point High School and on August 14, 1947, she married Lawton Walker “Joe” Torbert and they made their home in Greensboro. During her working career, she was a teller at Citizens Union Bank which is now Bank South. She was an active and longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro. Fredena enjoyed reading and crocheting.

She is survived by two daughters Terri Eskew (Tom) of Gainesville, GA and Marcia Marchman (Andy) of Acworth, GA; a son, Greg Torbert of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons, Britt Marchman (Kate) and their children, John Marchman and Morgana Marchman and Kyle Marchman (Stephanie) and a number of other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawton Walker Torbert; and sisters, Mary Martin Mullins and Dorothy Martin Cronic.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Mike Hardy officiating. Visitation will be at McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. Serving as pallbearers are Andy Marchman, Britt Marchman, Kyle Marchman, John Marchman, Tom Eskew and Glenn Torbert. The family requests that any memorials be made to Clairmont Oaks, 441 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030 for the purchase of books, because of her love for reading or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.
