Fred Gilbert McCannon, Sr

Fred Gilbert McCannon, Sr. of Union Point, GA, died on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Son of the late Robert Gilfred McCannon and Minnie Turner McCannon, Fred was born on October 30, 1932, in Union Point, Georgia. A lifelong resident of Greene County, he graduated from Union Point High School in 1950. After high school he worked for Quality Food Store in Union Point and later became the owner. For a number of years he was the manager of Morgan Furniture Company in Union Point. He received his twenty-five year pin from Chapel Lodge in Union Point. For twelve years he served as City Councilman in Union Point and was a member of the Greene County Airport Board in Greensboro. He loved to fly his airplane and fish and ride on his pontoon boat. Fred was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Julia Wilson McCannon of Union Point, GA; a son Fred Gilbert McCannon Jr. and wife Stefanie of Watkinsville, GA; two sisters, Dorothy Wray and husband George of Bairdstown, GA and Ann Worthen of Greensboro, GA; sister-in-law, Wanda H. McCannon of Union Point, GA; two brothers, Harold McCannon of Winterville, GA and Kenneth McCannon and wife Pat of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Leslie M. Bryant and husband Shane of Knoxville, TN and Andrea M. Farmer of Knoxville, TN; six great grandchildren, Dylan Green, Bailey Green, Bailey Bryant, Hayden Bryant, Elijah Farmer, and Trace Farmer all of Knoxville, TN; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert "Bobby" McCannon and Franklin Joseph McCannon Sr.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, 2121 Union Point Highway (Hwy 278), Greensboro, GA with Rev. Bobby Bear and Rev. Frankie Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the Penfield Cemetery, 1211 Cemetery Road, (Penfield) Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Freddie McCannon Jr., Robert Jump, Greg Brown, Shane Bryant, Dylan Green and Donnie Harrison. Honorary pallbearers are Hollis Yearwood, Henry Sisson, Mike Smith, Harold Wilson and Howell Nelms. The family will receive friends Monday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Callaway Funeral Home in Union Point.
