Florence Moon Obituary

Florence Irene Nash Moon of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away on the morning of Thursday, January 21, 2021 at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, Georgia. She was born on February 15, 1935, in Philomath, Georgia. She was the second of four children born to the late William Thomas Nash, Sr. and Lydia Ardelle Armour Nash. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1953. On January 10, 1954, she married the love of her life, Emory Fred Moon. They were married for 67 years, and they had two children, Rhonda Kay Moon Byce and Thomas Fred Moon.

During her working career, she served as the Administrative Assistant in the Greensboro office and later in the Monticello, Georgia office of the United States Forest Service, retiring in 1986. Florence served as the first Georgia President of the National Organization for Women Federal Government Employees.  In October of 1977, she and her husband, Fred, opened Moon’s Supermarket, Inc. in Greensboro. They, along with their children, operated this business, working many hours together to establish a successful store. In September of 2007, they sold the business, and Florence and Fred retired. They enjoyed traveling together, often including their children and grandchildren, to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, South America, and Europe.

As a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro, Florence worked as the Sunday School Director of the Nursery for over 40 years. In 2004, she became a member of Grace Fellowship of Greensboro. For a number of years, she was an active member of the Pilot Club of Greene County. Florence served as the President of the Nathanael Greene Academy Grandparents’ Club for 16 years. She was well-known for baking cakes and holding raffles to raise money for NGA. More than anything, family was important to Florence, and she was often referred to as Gan-Gan by many of her grandchildren’s friends. She enjoyed Sunday night dinners with her family for many years. She was a Godly woman who embodied the love of Christ and taught her family to serve the Lord. Florence was a very generous, hard-working lady who always had a smile on her face.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, William Thomas (Billy) Nash, Jr., Hazel Nash Noggle, and Walter Charles Nash, Sr.  She is survived by her husband, Emory Fred Moon, of Greensboro; her children, Rhonda Moon Byce (husband, Billy) and Thomas Fred Moon (wife, Donna) all of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Bill Byce (wife Brandi) of Thomasville, Georgia, Brook Moon Pietrantone (husband Joseph) of Georgetown, Tennessee; and five great-granddaughters, Braelyn Nicole Byce, Hannah Kate Byce, Madison Emory Byce, Avery Grace Byce, all of Thomasville, Georgia, and Madelyn Grace Pietrantone of Georgetown, Tennessee. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Ellie Nash of Madison, Emma Nash of Greensboro, Nita Meadows and Patricia Adams of Union Point, Dean Mansfield of Washington, and Sherrie Moon of Locust Grove. She leaves behind a number of cousins, nieces, nephews, and very good friends who loved her dearly.
