Eugene Talmadge “Gene” Wray, age 77, of Bairdstown, died Monday, February 1, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 12, 1932 in Maxeys, Georgia to the late Whitfield Wray and Eula Crane Wray. He grew up and attended school in Maxeys while working on a farm and later worked at the sawmill. During the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Army. After the war he worked in the pulpwood industry, drove a school bus and was a motor grade operator for the Greene County Road Department. For over twenty years, he worked in the maintenance department at Mary Leila Cotton Mill, which later became Wellington Puritan Mills. For the next five years, he was the night watchman for Wellington Puritan.
He is survived by two daughters, Debra Ann Aaron and husband Keith of Lexington, GA and Tammy Michelle Williams of Bairdstown, GA; two sons, Terry Eugene Wray and wife Carol of Bairdstown, GA and Rodney Wray and wife Michelle of Bairdstown, GA; sisters, Bessie Mathis of Watkinsville, GA, Helen Clark of Maxeys, GA, Betty Adkins-Glover of Macon, GA, Pat Roberson and husband Mercer of Stone Mountain, GA; a brother, George S. “Bud” Wray and wife Dorothy of Bairdstown, GA; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Herrington.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the McCommons Chapel with Rev. Danny Holdredge officiating. Interment will follow at Bairds Baptist Church Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night and 1:00 p.m. until time for the service on Wednesday at McCommons Funeral Home.
