Essie Melinda Straughn Holton of Greensboro GA, died peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospice House In Watkinsville on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at the age of 63. Essie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. She will always be remembered for her warmth and kindness. She was born in Pensacola, FL on July 16, 1959 to the late Willie Mitchell and Ester Goldsmith. She attended school in Pensacola and New York. Essie married Freeman Lester Holton who preceded her in death. While living in New York, she was the Assistant Manager for the Rag Shop for thirteen years. Essie moved from New York to Georgia and has lived in Greensboro for the last three years. She was very talented and loved crafts such as sewing, and crocheting. Watching and interpreting African movies was a favorite pastime.
Essie is survived by her children: Kimberly Holton of Greensboro, GA, Will Holton (Cheryl) of Pensacola, FL; God daughters, Joann Richardson “Starlight” and Jackie Williams; grandchildren: Raymond Maynard, Trinity Craig, Nevaeh Craig, Kaylah Holton, Jaylyn Holton, Alexah Holton, Aalayah Holton, Zackyah Holton, My’Leah Holton, Devin Jones (Caitlyn Baker), Marcus Jones, Jamel Walker, Jasmine Williams, Chloe Williams and Devan (DJ) Williams; great grandchildren, Elijah Jones and Nevaeh Jones; sisters: Lenora Houston and Evelyn Rooke; a cousin who was more like a sister, Sheila Houston; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends too numerous to name. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Holton and brothers, Melvin Straughn and James Straughn.
