Emory Alton “Kitch” Kitchens

Emory Alton “Kitch” Kitchens, age 92, of Greensboro, Georgia, died on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. Kitch was born in Jewell, Georgia on December 15, 1924, the son of the late Thomas Candler Kitchens and Eva Mae Moates Kitchens. After the mill burned in Jewell, Georgia, the family moved to Greensboro.  He attended  Greensboro High School where he played football, basketball and was on the track team.  Kitch enlisted in the United States Navy on December 14, 1942. During World War II he was part of six invasions including Tarawa, Saipan, Palaus, Leyte, Luzon and Okinawa. He received an honorable discharge on December 10, 1945. After the war he joined the Herald Journal working with Carey Williams, Sr. where he was a printer and faithful employee for over sixty years until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Greensboro. Kitch had a passion for watching the Georgia Bulldogs play football and knowing and keeping up with the residents of Greene County.

He was preceded in death by his sister Martha Kitchens in 1988 and his brother, Harry M. Kitchens in 1999. He is survived by a nephew, Harry Kitchens and a niece Sheila Steidinger, other relatives and a host of friends. He is also survived by dear friends, Mike Lynn, Toni Lynn, Crystal Lynn, Jennifer Anthony, Scott Burden, Laura Burden, Katy Burden, Adam Burden and Brandon Burden. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside Services will be held Monday, March 27, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Greensboro City Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Mark Anthony, Jarrett McElheney, Scott Burden, Adam Burden, Brandon Burden, Mike Lynn, Buddy Bufford and David Kopp. Honorary pallbearers will be Carey Williams, Jr and Johnnie Satterfield.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until time for the service at McCommons Funeral Home. We would like to give a special thanks to the three caregivers, Sondra Porter “Tiny”, Renita Jernigan and Mae Lou Porter “Molly” for their care and love for Kitch. The family requests that any memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Youth Group, 203 South Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
