Celebrating the Life of Emily Cosby Vaughn

Emily Cosby Vaughn, age 89, after a short illness, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, on Thursday, May 25, 2023 surrounded by her two daughters. Born in Washington, Georgia on August 10, 1933, she was the youngest daughter of Thomas Blakey Cosby, Sr. and Sally Witcher Cosby. She graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1950. She lived in Washington until she started her married life and business with her husband. Emily was a member of First Baptist Church of Union Point where she taught the smallest children in the Nursery Department as long as her health permitted. She was also involved in the food ministry of the church, card ministry and the Van McAlpin Mission Group.

Emily had a wonderful childhood in the country where she learned some of her talents from her Mother. This followed her throughout life until her eyesight failed. She learned to cook and sew and one of her favorite past times was embroidery. Her daughters, as well as her three granddaughters, each have some of her beautifully embroidered pillowcases to enjoy. Another of her early past times was gardening where she gave her daughters their love of flowers and how to take care of various types of plants.

After high school graduation, Emily married John Durham (Jack) Vaughn on Christmas Eve, 1950 and they worked together over the years at Jack’s Place. First, they served teenagers with curb service under the big pecan trees. Later, Jack’s Place was a restaurant, gas station and grocery store. In later years, customers came from all around to buy their work boots and cowboy boots.

Emily is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis Vaughn Blanton (Terry) of Greensboro, GA and Susan Vaughn Spradley (David) of Watkinsville, GA; her three granddaughters, Dr. Jessica Spradley of Watkinsville, GA, Rebekah Daniell (Brad) of Dunwoody, GA, and Jennifer Paulk (Andy) of Dacula, GA; ten nieces and nephews; and a number of other relatives and friends.  Emily was predeceased by her husband, Jack Vaughn, in 2007; her sister, Mary Cosby Edmunds, in 1964 and her brother, Tom Cosby, Jr. in 2001.
