Doyle Lewis Merritt, age 76, of Martinez, GA, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at University Hospital in Augusta, GA. Born July 31, 1937 in Greene County, he was the son of the late Reid Ceils Merritt and Onnie Belle Lewis Merritt. He attended Greensboro High School. On March 11, 1960, he married the former Regina Roth of Washington, Georgia. He grew up dairy farming and continued cattle farming throughout his life. His working career began as a meat cutter at A & P in Washington, GA and later he owned and operated his own grocery store, The Lincoln IGA. After closing the grocery store, he worked for USDA APHIS for eight years. He was a member of Martinez United Methodist Church. The things he enjoyed most were working on the cattle farm, being with friends and especially being with his family and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Regina Carolyn Roth Merritt of Martinez, GA; children, Sandra Merritt Hardee, Donna Merritt Saxon (Jeff), Charlie Merritt (Cindy) all of Martinez, GA and Tony Merritt (Dana) of Evans, GA; brothers, Jack V. Merritt (Montine) of White Plains, GA, Ceils Merritt (Carol) of White Plains, GA; sisters, Sybil Godbee (Marion) of Covington GA, and Lois Leach (Billy) of White Plains, GA; grandchildren, Haley Merritt, Erica Saxon, Austin Saxon, Kirk Saxon, Reid Merritt, Morgan Merritt, Jessi Chambers and Heather Hardee; great grandchildren, Laci and Lily Edenfield; a number of other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Nell Powell and Louise Atkinson.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church, 3091 Liberty Church Road, White Plains, GA 30678 with Rev. Randy Godbee officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Reid Merritt, Austin Saxon, Kirk Saxon, Cecil Powell, Darrell Merritt and Darrell Roth. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
