Charlie Alonzo Edwards, age 94, of White Plains, GA, passed away on Tuesday, at The Grove Senior Assisted Living facility in Watkinsville, GA. Born on August 31, 1931, in Milledgeville, GA, Charlie was the son of the late Waldo and Ila Mae Morgan Edwards. Charlie was a gentle soul whose faith in Jesus Christ led him to be loving, kind, slow to anger and quick to forgive. He was President of Edwards Lumber Company in Sparta, GA from 1961 until his retirement in 1992, working alongside his dad and brothers, Ernest and Aaron. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Stephens Baptist Church, serving as Deacon for many years.
Charlie married Louise Yearwood Edwards on September 6, 1951. Louise preceded Charlie in death in 1992. Charlie and Louise are survived by two daughters: Janis Edwards of White Plains, GA and Deborah Womack of Savannah, GA. Charlie married Peggy Mauldin Rhodes Edwards on October 24, 1992. Peggy preceded Charlie in death in 2014. They are survived by Peggy’s children: DeDee Bowen (Glenn) of Tenille, GA and Joey Rhodes (Vickey) of Crawfordville, GA.
Charlie was so proud of his grandchildren: Bret Antwine (Allyson), Jamie Antwine (Brionne), Rob Womack (Chandra), Kelley Nichole Fergot (Ryan), Ashley MacNamara (James), Hannah Elliott (Taylor) and Emily West (Tucker). Charlie was equally proud of his great-grandchildren: Colton Antwine, Addy Grace Antwine, Emily Antwine, Caleb Antwine, Parker Antwine, Hudson Antwine, Connor Fergot, Nora Fergot, Katie MacNamara, Julia MacNamara, Jackson Elliott, Greyson Elliott, Charlie Jayne Elliott, and Maggie West. Charlie is also survived by his dear sister, Nena Mayo. He was preceded in death by sister, Anna Pearl Edwards, and brothers, Ernest and Aaron Edwards.
Serving as pallbearers are Bret Antwine, Jamie Antwine, Rob Womack, Kelley Fergot, Joey Rhodes and Martin Leverett. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Stephens Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at The Grove Assisted Living facility and Agape Hospice Care for the loving care shown to Mr. Edwards who was affectionately known as “Papa” by these special people.
Funeral services, officiated by Lamar Nix, will take place at McCommons Chapel in Greensboro, GA, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at McCommons Funeral Home.
