Carolyn Stephens Obituary

Carolyn Mae Phillips Stephens passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at PruittHealth – Toomsboro in Toomsboro, GA. She was the daughter of the late Julian Keith Phillips and Bessie Rue Allgood Phillips.  She graduated from Greene County High School in Eutaw, AL in 1955 and attended Montevallo University in Montevallo, AL. Carolyn married Raymond David Stephens, Sr. on March 31, 1957.

Mrs. Stephens spent decades as a Social Worker in the Liberty County Department of Family and Children Services. During that time, she encountered many children and touched countless numbers of lives. Those children would stay within Mrs. Stephens's heart all throughout her life, even until her dying days. She would retire in 1995 and move to Wilkinson County to be with her daughter and grandsons. Mrs. Stephens always found comfort in the church, becoming a prominent member of Gordon United Methodist Church. She would serve on many committees and clubs, including the Widows' Club, a group of ladies that became very near and dear to her heart.

Mrs. Stephens was a compassionate and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cherished her mother, Bessie, very much and devoted a large portion of her life after retirement as her caregiver. Mrs. Stephens enjoyed growing up in Alabama with her siblings, Charlie, James, and Terry Dale where they learned many hard life lessons. As a Marine wife, Mrs. Stephens followed the love of her life Raymond wherever he would go. While times could get hard for a military family, her strong will and determination kept everything and everyone going. She adored her children, David and Juliana and provided them with the best life she could. The lessons she taught them only made them better human beings and ready to give the world the kindness and compassion that she exemplified.

She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren, Tyler and Kyle, and making memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. They will never forget the class in which their Mimi exhibited on a daily basis. They will never forget how lucky they were to have her just a few steps away growing up. They could always count on her for anything they needed, as could anyone. Even in her last few weeks of awareness, Mrs. Stephens was delighted to become a great-grandmother and enjoyed her face times with little Nora Juliana. She was so excited to see her family continue to grow.

Survivors include her daughter, Juliana Rue Bradley and husband, Jack; grandchildren Tyler Tucker and wife Jennifer and Kyle Tucker and wife Morgan; great granddaughter, Nora Juliana Tucker; brother, Terry D. Love; sister-in-law, Zowie Phillips of Demopolis, AL;  many special nieces and nephews; and many good friends including Sonia and Daryl Stowe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ret. Gunnery Sergeant Raymond David Stephens, Sr.; her son, Raymond David Stephens, Jr.; and brothers, Charlie and James.
