Carol Alice (Jarm) Hallauer

       Carol Hallauer was born Carol Alice Jarm in East Hartford, Connecticut. She attended East Hartford High School where she did well in her studies and played soccer.

       Carol received her college degree in 1968 from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, then took a job as a junior high school teacher in Pensacola, Florida. While In Pensacola, she met Russ Hallauer, who was undergoing pilot training in the United States Navy. They were married in 1969 after Russ had “won his wings” as a Naval Aviator.

       When Russ was sent to Vietnam as a helicopter gunship pilot, Carol remained with her parents in East Hartford. She had her first baby, Russ Jr., while living in East Hartford.

       After he returned from Vietnam, Russ and Carol moved to San Diego, California where he was assigned to another Navy aircraft squadron. A year later, when his new squadron was sent back to Vietnam, she went to live with Russ’s parents and had her second son, Scott, while living in Rochester, New York. In 1973, Russ was selected for the Navy’s Test Pilot School and the family of four moved to Patuxent River, Maryland.

         Following graduation from Test Pilot School, Russ and Carol stayed in Patuxent River for another three years and Carol had their third son, Todd. The four years in Patuxent River marked the longest period of time they had stayed anywhere during their Navy marriage.

       The next Navy assignment was in Jacksonville, Florida. Carol stayed home with their three sons while Russ went on Aircraft Carrier duty to the Mediterranean Sea. While overseas, Russ was designated an Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer, meaning that he would now specialize in Naval Aircraft Acquisition rather than Naval Operations. After Jacksonville, Carol and Russ moved to Alexandria, Virginia where she started volunteering in the local high school Guidance Counselor’s office.

       The next tour was at the Naval Air Development center in Warminster, Pennsylvania and following that, she and her family moved back to Alexandria, Virginia. Carol received her Master’s Degree in Education from George Mason University in January 1993. With the boys a little older, she started working full time as a guidance counselor in the high school they attended.

       With all three boys off to college, Carol and Russ moved back to Patuxent River, Maryland in 2000. Carol continued her career as a Guidance Counselor in the local high schools. In 2009 she became a Pupil Personnel Worker for the school system, an educational social worker.

       Carol retired from the Maryland school system in 2013 after twenty years of service. In 2015, Carol became a breast cancer survivor for a second time. Later that year she and her husband moved to Reynolds Lake Oconee, a community in Greensboro, Georgia. She made a lot of new friends and joined numerous book/ladies clubs. She also learned how to golf, play Mahjong and shoot sporting clays.

       In September of 2020, Carol was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and underwent a series of treatments. She died of cancer June 26th of 2021. Carol loved her family first and foremost, but also loved reading, traveling, lighthouses, talking, water aerobics, walking her dog Sadie, golf, Mahjong, any type of card playing, travel planning, pillows and the Manchester United football club. She is survived by her husband Russ, three sons – Russ Jr., Scott and Todd, three daughters in law -  Cecilia, Jennifer and Amanda, and seven grandchildren – Maggie, Owen, Lucas, Kelly, Keira, Leo and Jasper. May this wonderful woman rest in peace.

       There will be an Episcopal “Celebration of Life” memorial service at 4 pm Thursday, the 1st of July, at the Lake Oconee Lutheran Church in Eatonton.
