Carol Bowers Obituary

Carol Frances Fischer Bowers, 93, of Greensboro, GA, formerly of Atlanta, GA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 27, 2024 at her residence at The Glen at Lake Oconee. She was born in Memphis, TN on February 23, 1931 to the late Carl Sodemann Fischer and Frances Sykes Fischer. She was a graduate of Central High School in Memphis, TN and furthered her education at Stephens College in Columbia, MO receiving an associate degree there. In July of 1951 she married Ernest A. Bowers (Pinky) and made their home beautiful while raising their sons, Lawrence (Larry) and John. She was a founding member of St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA and a faithful member there until her move to Greensboro in early 2020.

Carol taught preschool at Briarlake Baptist Church in DeKalb County for a while in her younger years. She always loved cats and other small critters, all things British royalty and culture, solving jigsaw puzzles and watching tennis matches on television. She enjoyed long-time connections with several close friends through the years. Granmommies, as the grandchildren called her, was extremely proud of her Anglican heritage at St. Mary's Cathedral in Memphis, where she was baptized as a child and married at age 20, and at St. Bede's, where she served in different ways for sixty years and helped to sew the needlepoint kneelers at the communion rail.

In addition to her sons, Lawrence Bowers (Lynn) of Greensboro, GA and John Bowers (Paula) of Olive Branch, MS, survivors include her grandchildren: Christopher Bowers (Andrea) of Conyers, GA, Beth Bowers Abbott (Anthony) of Marietta, GA, Jessica Bowers Bryant (Steven) of Biloxi, MS and Anna Bowers (Bryce Long) of Memphis, TN; five great-grandchildren: Rhys, Finchley and Penelope Abbott, Gray Long and Ellis Bryant; sister, Ann Fischer Byars of Memphis, TN; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to residents and staff members at The Glen at Lake Oconee, to members of the Congregational Care Team at the First Methodist Church of Greensboro-Lake Oconee and to the staff of Georgia Hospice for all their care and kindnesses to Carol over the last four years.
