C. Smith Obituary

C. Weldon Smith, 83, prominent Greensboro, Georgia businessman and civic leader died Sunday, December 16, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Smith retired as President of the Bank of Greensboro in 1985 where he had worked for 48 years. He was born in the Liberty Community of Greene County on April 3, 1918, the son of the late Clifford Alexander Smith and Olive Cawthon Smith. He was Valedictorian of Greensboro High School class of 1935. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the Italian Campaign. He founded C.W. Smith Insurance Agency in 1938 and served as mayor of Greensboro for 12 years. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 29 years, chairman of the Board of Stewards and held many other board positions in the church. Mr. Smith was a 50 year member of San Marino Masonic Lodge #34. He was past president of Greensboro Lions Club and Greene County Chamber of Commerce; President of Greensboro Industrial Corporation, Forward Greene Industrial Corporation and Greater Greensboro Industrial Corporation; and a member of Greene County Country Club and Athens Country Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Marjorie T. Smith of Greensboro; two sons, Dr. Clifford W. Smith, Jr. and daughter-in-law Bernie Todd Smith of Rochchester, New York, Larry Smith and daughter-in-law Donna Smith of Greensboro, GA.; a daughter, Cecily Callaway and son-in-law John Callaway of Athens, GA.; seven grandchildren, Cindy Callaway McKoy, Brad Smith, Melissa Callaway, Bo Smith, Alexander Smith, Taylor Smith and Morgan Smith; a great granddaughter, Anna Alyssa McKoy. Mr. Smith had a wide circle of friends across the state and was greatly loved and admired.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Burial will follow in Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Lamar Callaway, Ken Cawthon, Fred Hunter, Jr., Dan Jones, David Kopp, John Marchman, David Thornton and Keith Smith. Honorary pallbearers are the Mens Bible Class of First United Methodist Church, Ford Boston, L.Y. Kenimer, Claude Robinson, Jr., Charles E. Easley Sr., A. P. Roper, Carey Williams Jr., R. M. Channell, Darrel Phelps and George Lawrence. The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
