Billy Fred Callaway, 76 of Greensboro, GA died Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born September 15, 1944 in Savannah, Georgia the son of the late Lawrence Felton Callaway and Annette Ogletree Callaway.
Billy graduated from Greensboro High School in the Class of 1962. After graduation he joined the United States Army serving his country until 1965. While in the Army, he obtained the rank of Sergeant. Billy then went to work for Southern Bell, BellSouth and then retired from AT&T after thirty-six years. Everybody knew him as the telephone man. On June 15, 1967 he married the former Emily Clements of Siloam, GA. He enjoyed spending time with his family and most of all his grandchildren. His hobbies included working in his shop building blue bird boxes, cutting grass, telling stories, genealogy, reading western books, watching western movies and spending time with his fellow retirees of AT&T. He was the past Athletic Director at Nathanael Greene Academy and served on the board. Billy was a Little League coach for baseball and softball for the Greene County Recreation Department. He attended Penfield Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, Emily Callaway of Greensboro, GA, Billy is survived by a son, Larry Callaway of Edgefield, SC; daughter, Bobbie Callaway of Bogart, GA; sisters, Gloria McAvoy (Billy) and Emily Dunn; brother in law, Sonny Ansley; grandchildren, Avery Tylor Callaway and Jackson Curtis Callaway; numerous nieces and nephews; extended Clements family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Linda Ansley, Betty Christie and Barbara Callaway; grandson, Garrett Keith Callaway and brother-in-law, Jimmy Dunn.
Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Greensboro City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA with Rev. Farrett Boswell officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Jerry Dunn, James Dunn, Eugene Moon, Jeffrey Smith, Ralph Boswell, and Tracy English. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Any memorials may be made to Nathanael Greene Academy, P. O.
