Bennie Ruth Cannon Matthews, age 90 of Crawfordville, GA, passed away December 28, 2022. She was born September 30, 1932 in Union Point, GA to the late Harold L. Cannon and Evelyn Davis Cannon. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Annette Rainwater, Millie Croft, Martha Cannon and infant Sara Francis, her first husband Alfred Smith Matthews and second husband Gene Matthews. Ruth lived in Forest Park, GA for many years as well as Dallas, GA before returning to the area in which she grew up.
Family was always the most important part of Ruth’s life. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family both on-line and in person. When talking about Ruth, words like kind, compassionate, loving and gracious are some of the words that describe her and how she lived her life.
Survivors include her children, Faye (Dave) Hartley of Bowling Green, KY, Al Matthews of Crawfordville, GA, Martha Lannen (Jack) of McDonough, GA and Steve Matthews of Chapel Hill, TN., sister Mary Jordan of Sasser Georgia, and brothers Harry Cannon of Comer, GA and Jim Cannon (Alma) of Richmond, TX. Her grandchildren Kellie Simmons (Chuck), Alison Griswell, Kevin Matthews (Brittany), Alan Hartley (Heather), Daniel Hartley, Andrew Hartley, Ben Matthews, Kevin Lannen (Erin), Casey Bray (Joy) and Wendy Edde (Brian); Great grandchildren: Addyson, Lilly, Abbey, Carson, Emma, Alex, Lucas, Grady, Cormac, Rory, Anna Grace, Adam, Courtney, Tracie, Carly, Michael, Lily, Jessie, Hannah and Brooke. Ruth is also survived by her step-children Rick Matthews (Patty), Linda Matthews, Karen Bacon and Mark Matthews (Michelle) as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2022 at 11:00 am at Robinson Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Mark Yearwood officiating. Following the graveside service, the family invites all friends and family to join us at Alexander Stephens State Park – Group Shelter/Banquet Hall, Crawfordville, GA for a celebration of Ruth’s life.
