Arthur William Schafer, Sr.

Arthur William Schafer, Sr., age 86, of Buckhead, GA, formerly of Thunder Valley, Eatonton, GA, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021.  Art was born July 17, 1935 in Queens, New York, the son of the late Anthony Schafer and Rose Droge Schafer.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Anita Trovato Schafer.  Art began his career in the United States Coast Guard, later he joined the New York Police Department, after that he became a New York firefighter.  Upon retiring from the New York Fire Department in 1977, they moved to Florida where he was employed as a maintenance engineer for condos in Sarasota, Florida.  Years later they moved to Lawrenceville, GA where he was employed at the Gwinnett Medical Center as a security guard.  While in Lawrenceville, he joined the Knights of Columbus, and went on to become a Fourth Degree Knight.  Shortly after, they moved to the Lake Oconee area and became members of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, where Art served as an usher.

Survivors include his domestic partner, Geraldine Sable, his two children, Kathryn M. Schafer and Arthur W. Schafer, Jr. along with two grandchildren, Anthony Schafer and Lyssa Schafer.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2021 at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Father Michael Silloway officiating.  The family will receive friends at a reception following the service in the church’s Sacred Heart Social Hall.
