Ann Smith Obituary

Ann Mary Letteire Smith of Greensboro GA, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020. She was 89 years old. Born in Flushing, NY, Ann was the daughter of the late James Letteire and Pauline Mallon. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Bayside High School on Long Island, and went on to graduate from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked as a secretary in New York City before her marriage.

Ann married Phillip E. Smith in 1953 at Saint James Avellino Church in Flushing, NY. They raised their three children as Phil climbed the corporate ladder and were frequently transferred.  Ann and Phil made moving so often an adventure for the entire family, and they lived in seven states over their sixty years together.  In addition to raising a family, Ann occasionally worked part time as an administrative assistant for small personal businesses.

Ann and Phil retired to Stone Harbor, New Jersey in 1986, and spent 21 very happy years there at their seaside home. Her passion for gardening led her to serving as the President of the Stone Harbor Garden Club, and  she won frequent awards at local gardening shows for her floral arrangements. She also served on the Board of Directors of  the Stone Harbor Civic Club, and the town of Stone Harbor earned National Recognition when she was a leading member of the Stone Harbor Shade Tree Committee. Her devotion to her community drove her to volunteer at the local elementary school and library, the American Red Cross, and the Stone Harbor History Museum. Ann and Phil were selected as Citizens of the Year in Stone Harbor for their many contributions to the community.

They moved to Georgia in 2007 to be closer to their daughter and loved living in Great Waters on Lake Oconee. Ann had a lifelong love of reading and particularly enjoyed her book club. She was also an enthusiastic player of Mah Jongg and bridge. After Phil’s passing in 2014, Ann moved in with her daughter and son-in-law. She was diagnosed with heart failure and fought long and hard against the disease. Ann was known for her kindness, sweet personality, and generous nature.  She was extremely intelligent, fiercely persistent, and a perfectionist. She also was unafraid to let people know exactly what she thought - a trait which her family enjoyed and endured with humor. Her wisdom, kindness, and strength will be sorely missed.

Ann  is survived by her daughter, Joanne Jones and her husband Chip, of Greensboro GA, her  daughter, Nancy Julian and her husband Nick of Milford, MA , and her son, Phillip Smith and his wife Gretchen, of Coto de Caza CA.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alexander Jones IV, Marena Batzanian, Courtney De Craen and her husband Joe, and Michelle Smith; as well as her step grandchildren, Rebecca Julian and Nick Julian III, and  her great grandson, Ryder De Craen.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers at  Compassus Hospice and to the staff at the Glen at Lake Oconee Village for the loving care they gave Ann. A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at a later date. McCommons  Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ann’s name to the Greene County Public Library, 610 South Main Street, Greensboro GA  30642.
