William Shirley Obituary

William Earl “Bill” Shirley, age 65, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Saint Joseph’s At East Georgia in Greensboro, GA. Born in Augusta, GA on December 1, 1945 he was the son of the late Earl Wayne Shirley and Mary Willie Mills Shirley. He was a 1964 graduate of Butler High School in Augusta, GA and attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina. For a number of years he served in the National Guard while living in Augusta. He married Carolyn Jenkins on June 28, 1990 and they moved to Greensboro that same year. For the last eighteen years, he worked for the City of Greensboro, first as manager of the Waste Treatment Plant and then as the Public Works Director. Bill was a member of the River of Life Church in Eatonton, Georgia. He enjoyed fishing and camping. In addition to his wife, Carolyn Jenkins Shirley, of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by five daughters, Tammy Bettis and husband Doyle of Buckhead, GA, LuJuana Brown of Starkville, MS, Melanie Reid of Greensboro, GA, Shea Clayton of Memphis, TN and Angela Ramey of Oklahoma; and his grandchildren that he raised, Hannah Clayton of Greensboro, GA, Blayne Alexander Clayton of Conyers, GA and Joseph Wayne Clayton II of Santee Cooper, SC; two sisters, Joann Brack and husband Gordon of Hephzibah, GA and Mary Jane Miller and husband Stan of Gainesville, FL; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and his co-workers at the City of Greensboro. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lucille Shirley Goodwin in November of 2002. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the McCommons Chapel with Rev. Bill King officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service Thursday afternoon at McCommons Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
