William Rhodes, Jr. M.D. Obituary

William Henderson Rhodes, Jr., M.D., age 83, of Union Point, Georgia, died on Thursday, November 19, 2015. A lifelong resident of Union Point, Georgia, and son of the late William H. Rhodes, Sr. and Evelyn Overton Rhodes; Bill was born in Newnan, Georgia on August 2, 1932.  He graduated from Union Point High School in 1949. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in science from the University of Georgia in 1956 and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.  During the Korean Conflict he was 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army and served as a clinical psychologist.  He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta in June of 1961.  He completed post graduate studies at Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University School of Medicine. Bill practiced Family Medicine for 54 years serving his community in the following ways: Fellow of American Academy of Family Practice, exercised medical staff privileges and served as Chief of Staff as well as Laboratory Director at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital, member of Greene County Hospital Authority, Medical Director of Greene Point Nursing Home, Medical Director of Boswell Parker Nursing Home, Chairman of Greene County Board of Health, Faculty Preceptor for Mercer University School of Medicine.  He served as a member of the following medical associations:  Oconee Valley Medical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, American Medical Association, Georgia Medical Directors Association, American Medical Directors Association, and American Geriatric Society.  He was a Freemason and member of Chappell Lodge in Union Point, Royal Arch Chapter 154 in Greensboro, Mount Hope Commandery in West Virginia and a Shriner in Al Sihah Temple in Macon.  He was also a member of the Athens Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.  Bill was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union Point where he served as Deacon and Ruling Elder.  He was also a member of the Union Point Lions Club.

Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years Cynthia Peavy Rhodes, daughters Cynthia Rhodes of Athens, Ginger Mulherin (Philip) of Atlanta, Sally Boswell (J.) of Union Point, and Lee Channell (Mark) of Bogart; grandchildren, Mary Gordon Mulherin, Hallie Boswell, Evelyn and Jesse Reville, and Ginny and Mac Channell.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, November 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Union Point, 201 Veazey Street, Union Point, GA with Rev. Dr. Ford G’Segner, Rev. Dr. James Choomack, Jr. and Rev. Stephen Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the Wisteria Cemetery, Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Charles George, Bill Overton, Lanier Rhodes, Trey Rhodes, John Rhodes, and Ricky Newsom. Honorary pallbearers will be George Newton, Kenneth George, David Heffner, and George Brandon.
