William Carter Obituary

William Lee “Bill” Carter, age 71, of Greensboro, GA died Monday, December 26, 2011 at Saint Joseph’s At East Georgia in Greensboro. Born on February 19, 1940 in Waynesboro, Georgia, he was the son of Virginia Elizabeth Posey Carter of Greensboro, GA and the late Jacob Lee Carter, Jr. In 1958 he graduated from Waynesboro High School, where he was the high school football signal caller for Class C State Champions. He married Carolyn Maddox on April 30, 1961 and in 1962 graduated from Furman University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration and was a member of the Scabbord & Blade Honor Society. He served his country in the United States Army during the Cold War and was commisioned 2nd Lieutenant with the third infantry division based in Germany. His career began in Atlanta working for Lockheed Martin. He then joined National Data Corporation serving as assistant vice president. Later he returned to Lockheed Martin as a manager in the Information Technology Division retiring in 1996. Bill was an active member of Grace Fellowship Church of Greensboro and had served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the committee that selected the property for Grace Fellowship. He was also a volunteer at the First Call Pregnancy Center. In addition to his wife, Carolyn Maddox Carter of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by two sons, William L. Carter, Jr. and wife Elaine of Panama City Beach, FL and E. Scott Carter and wife Jamie of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Jeanie C. Stephens and husband Edwin of Waynesboro, GA an Linda J. Carter of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Mallory Carter and Rebecca Carter; and a number of other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive, S.W., Atlanta, GA 30310 with Rev. Dr. Jimmy Long officiating and a Memorial Service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Derrell Worth, David Torbert, Jay Beeland, Tommy Moon and Mallory Granitz. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night at Grace Fellowship Church. The family requests that any memorials be made to Grace Fellowship Church, 1971 S.
