William Lewis Ashley, age 74, of the Veazey Community of Greene County, died Friday, November 4, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born March 4, 1937 to the late Floyd Roger Ashley and Bertha Kate Askew Ashley. He attended Greensboro High School and then entered the United States Army serving his country for four years from 1958 to 1962. He married the former Shirley Whitlow in September of 1962. Lewis began his working career for Mary Leila Cotton Mill, then worked for Bradley Pontiac. In 1993 he retired from Alcan as a crusher operator. He played the guitar for the Greene County Ramblers Band and they enjoyed playing for square dances. He was a member of Cornerstone Christian Center of Madison and enjoyed fishing and playing with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Shirley Whitlow Ashley, of the Veazey Community, he is survived by a daughter, Dean Ashley Griffin of Eatonton, GA; a son, David Ashley and wife Jeanie of the Veazey Community; son-in-law, Harold Griffin of LaGrange, GA; grandchildren, Josh Griffin, Chris Griffin, and Nicki Ashley; great grandchildren, Kaylie Miller and Jason Miller; special friends, Snuffy and Francine Smith of Greshamville, GA; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Russell Cash and Rev. Bruce Lovin officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Josh Griffin, Christopher Griffin, Harold Griffin, Robert "Snuffy" Smith, Jeff Smith and Terry Burnette. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
