Walter "Pep" Stone Obituary

Walter Littleton “Pep” Stone, of Greensboro, GA, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at Augusta University Medical Center. He was 88. A lifelong resident of Greene County, Pep was born on July 7, 1930 to the late Joseph Ellison Stone and Nellie Evelyn Little Stone. He attended Greensboro High School and left in the ninth grade after his father died. He was one of six children and went to work to help support the family.  On July 29, 1951 he married the former Geraldine “Jerry” Hussey of Sparta, GA who passed away in 1994 after more than forty-three years of marriage.  For twenty-six years Pep operated a dairy farm working hard from sun up to sun down.  He also ran a service station during the day going back and forth to the farm. He was very knowledgeable about Greene County history and enjoyed sharing it with others.  Pep was a member of the San Marino Lodge #34 where he received his 50 year apron in 2017.  He also served as the treasurer for forty-five years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Greensboro, where his mother was a longtime Sunday School teacher, but also attended Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church.  He served as a Greene County Commissioner for ten years.  Pep was generous and caring and loved to help people anyway he could.

In addition to his wife, Jerry Stone, and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Eva Lois Griffith, Josephine Clifton, and Shirley Walden; one brother, Clifford Stone; and good friend Rebecca Higdon.  He is survived by his daughters, Yvonne Stone of Greensboro, GA and Kay Von Alt of Monroe, GA; two grandchildren, Megan Green and husband Jason of Eatonton, GA and Jason Jordan and wife Hannah of Monroe, GA; three great grandchildren, Jase and Charlotte Green and Weston Jordan; one brother, Ed Stone and wife Fran of Estero, FL; five nieces; one nephew; great nieces and nephews; good friend, Jeanne Reynolds; a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church North Campus, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA with Rev. Ed Nelson and Rev. Mike Morgan officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 12:00 noon until time for the service at the church. Graveside service with Masonic Rites will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to the Masonic Children’s Home, 1417 Nottingham Drive, Macon, GA 31211 or the Greene Area Cattleman’s Association, 1180 C. Weldon Drive, Suite 110, Greensboro, GA 30642.  Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Jordan, Jason Green, Charles Crumbley, Richard Tolbert, Ken Cawthon, Jimmy Edmonds and Sam Roper.  Members of the San Marino Lodge #34 will serve as honorary pallbearers.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
