Walter Franklin “Smokey” Smith Walter Franklin “Smokey” Smith, age 66, of Crawfordville, GA died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born November 22, 1936 in Oconee County to the late Jim Smith and Chester Mae Patton Smith Boswell. He attended Penfield School as a child, graduated from Greensboro High School and was a member of Margarets Grove Baptist Church. For 28 years he was employed by the Georgia Forestry Commission. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Pearl Curtis Smith; a son, Donald Smith; and a brother, Robert Lamar Patton. He is survived by a son, Charles Smith and wife Tracy of Madison, GA; a step daughter, Anne Bourne and husband Richard of Thompson, GA; two step sons, George Neibert of Crawfordville, GA and William “Billy” Neibert of Crawfordville, GA; a grandchild, Jill Smith; and eight step grandchildren, Julianna Neibert, Joshua Neibert, Roxanne Neibert, Chelsie Neibert, Richard Bourne Jr., Ashley Bourne, Nick Barnes and Tim Duvall. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point, GA with Rev. Dennis Garner officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday night at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
