Vernon Lee Batson, age 65, of Oxford, GA, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA. Born in Greene County on October 14, 1944, he was the son of the late Carl Lee Batson and Ruby Merritt Batson. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1962 and attended North Georgia Technical School at Clarksville for two years. He served his country in the United States Navy for four years and was stationed in Puerto Rico during the Vietnam War. In 1970, he married the former Barbara Johnson of Greensboro, GA. For thirty-four years he worked as a communication Technician for AT&T. Vernon was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and especially his family.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Barbara Johnson Batson of Oxford, GA; a daughter, Jennifer Sorrow and husband Kevin and three sons, Wade Batson and wife Jill, Aaron Batson and wife Leigh and Carl Batson and wife Sherry all of Oxford, GA; two sisters, Carol Batson Finch and husband Johnny of Greensboro, GA and Marjorie Batson Ellenberg and husband Maner of Siloam, GA; a brother, Donald Batson and wife Carol of Eatonton, GA; seven grandchildren, Aley Batson, Blake Batson, Claire Batson, Garrett Sorrow, Mason Sorrow, McKenna Sorrow and Samantha Batson; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Travis Batson and Horace Batson.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the McCommons Chapel with Rev. Sean Nix and Ray Singleton officiating. Interment will follow at Walker United Methodist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Rodney Batson, Scott Batson, Keith Ellenberg, Pete Finch, Ceils Merritt and Alan Satterfield. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday night at McCommons Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, P. O.
