Thomas Joseph “Tom” Hughes

Thomas Joseph “Tom” Hughes, of Greensboro, GA, died Saturday, September 10, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens,GA after a short illness, at the age of 81.  Tom was born in Aliquippa. PA on August 26, 1935, to the late Joseph Francis Hughes and Myrtle Jensen Hughes.  After graduating from Aliquippa High School, he entered the Co-op program at Georgia Tech with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Corporation in 1953 and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.  He enjoyed a long and successful career with Goodyear and retired as a Regional Sales Manager after more than 40 years of service. In 1991 he moved from California to Lake Oconee where he made his permanent home for the last twenty-five years.  Among his many interests, Tom loved boating and taking care of the flowers and plantings around his beautiful lakefront home.  He was actively involved in fundraising and scholarship programs with Phi Sigma Kappa at Georgia Tech. He was dearly loved and will be missed by many.

Preceding him in death in 2011 was his wife of fifty-two years, Gloria Cain Hughes. He is survived by his sister, Betty Jane Gilmore of Moon Township, PA;  a sister-in-law Linda Cain Shelby (David) of Senoia,GA;, three nieces, Jamie Ebersole of Roaring Springs, PA; Pam Cain Calhoun of Geneva, AL; Amy Cain Ryals of Peachtree City GA; seven nephews, Robert Gilmore (Saundra) of Moon Township, PA, Timothy Gilmore (Janet) of Aliquippa, PA, and Michael Gilmore (Jeanne) of Pittsburgh, PA; David Shelby III (Casandra) of Kennesaw, GA; Christopher of Senoia, GA; Jody of Crestiew, FL; Jonathan of IL: James Jr of Indiana;  a number of other relatives and many friends.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date. He will be buried with his beloved wife, Gloria, in Geneva, AL.  The family is appreciative of the loving care given by the staff at St Mary's Hospital in Athens, GA and the support of his good friend Wilmer Rodriquez of Greensboro, GA. The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
