Shirley Chapman Lanier
Shirley Chapman Lanier, age 80, of the Centennial Community of White Plains, GA passed away Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Greene Point Health & Rehabilitation in Union Point. Born in Union Point, GA on March 31, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Garnet L. “Buck” Chapman and Lucy Mae Wilkes Chapman. She graduated from Union Point High School in 1956. After high school she attended business school in Atlanta and worked as a bookkeeper for the C & S National Bank. Later she worked for William Hulsey Drugstore in Sparta, GA and also Caldwell Laundry in Greensboro, GA. In March of 1959 she married James Edwin Lanier, Sr. and they recently celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage. She was a longtime active member of Centennial Christian Church, where she lead the singing for many years. Her joy was taking care of the pond and the ducks that lived there. Shirley also enjoyed cooking, growing flowers and fishing.
Survivors include her husband, James Lanier of White Plains, GA; grandson, Michael Lanier and his wife Miranda; two sisters, Ella Bramlett and her husband George of Woodville, GA and Vivian Landrum of Griffin, GA; daughter-in-law, Sandy Maxwell; several nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her only son, Jay Lanier.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Centennial Christian Church, 4828 Centennial Road, White Plains, GA 30678 with Rev. Farrett Boswell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are William Coleman, Keith James, Andy Shields, Russell Wall, Phil Eley and Wayne Corry. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
