Sara Jane McClanahan Hunt Morrison  

Dr. Sara Jane McClanahan Hunt Morrison, age 94, of Greensboro, GA, died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at her residence. Born on July 15, 1921, in Covington, TN, she was the daughter of the late James Samuel McClanahan and Mary Jane Bridges McClanahan. She graduated from Lambuth College in 1942, was the first to earn a Ph.D. in Nutrition from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1946 specializing in Human Nutrition.  Her career began as a Home Economics Teacher in Madison County, Tennessee.  She continued to teach at several hospitals and Universities in Connecticut, Tennessee and Georgia, retiring from Georgia State University, Atlanta, as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Community Health Nutrition.

She took a great deal of pride in being able to instill into her students the love and enthusiasm that she felt for nutrition science and human health. She authored many articles, as well as co-authored two nutrition texts, Nutrition: Principles and Clinical Practice and Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism, specifically designed and organized to make the study of nutrition understandable and meaningful to students. Those who knew her best appreciated her abundant intelligence, delightful sense of humor, admirable discipline, and unfailing generosity.

In December 1995, Sara married Frederick Maurice Morrison, Jr. and they lived in Uplands Retirement Village, Pleasant Hill, TN, until they moved to Greensboro in September 2010.

Sara is survived by four stepdaughters: Serena and William George (Piedmont, S.C), Melanie Vinuelas (Phoenix, AZ), Starr and Jim Courter (Greensboro, GA) and Elizabeth Lollar (Rome, GA). Other survivors include: seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one niece; two great nieces, one great nephew, two great, great nieces and one great, great nephew.  She is predeceased by her husband, Fred, and her two sisters, Carolyn Palmer McClanahan Pennington and Mary Maude McClanahan.

A Memorial Service will be held, Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 1400 Farmington Road, Madison, GA 30650.  Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at thechurch.
