Samuel D. Greene

Samuel D. Greene, age 83, of Crawfordville, Georgia, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at his residence. He was born on May 5, 1925 in McDuffie County, Georgia to the late Frank Greene and Maggie Craig Greene. He graduated form Alexander Stephens Institute in Crawfordville and then entered the United States Army. During World War II, he fought in the South Pacific and served during Korea from 1950 to 1953. Sam worked at Fort Gordon for 30 years as a Directorate of Industrial Operations retiring July 1, 1980. He was a faithful employee and over three decades made many friends at Fort Gordon. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and performed in 19 movies, 13 of which were local movies. He was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church, the Roy Dozier American Legion Post 8 in Crawfordville and a Mason at A. M. Wolihin Lodge #132 in Crawfordville. For over twenty-five years he was a baliff at the Taliaferro County Courthouse. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and cutting grass.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Lois Patterson Greene, who he married on January 16, 1954; two daughters; Sheila (Lary) Hawkins of Milledgeville, GA and Tina (Michael) McEver of Gray, GA; four sisters, Frankie Dyer of Hartwell, GA, Louise Greene of Crawfordville, GA, Myrtle (Robert Harold) Kendrick of Crawfordville, GA, Grace Green of Johnson City, TN; a brother, Charles (Sandra) Greene of Crawfordville, GA; two grandchildren, Jared Hawkins and Sean Hawkins both of Milledgeville, GA. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Elvin Greene, Mark Greene and Evelyn Edwards.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Crawfordville Baptist Church with Rev. John Autry officiating. Interment will follow at Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Jon Greene, Marcus Greene, Bobby Lord, Craig Dyer, Bobby Greene, Stoy Taylor, Whitey Gibbs and Ricky Greene. Honorary pallbearers are T. C. Harrington, Babe Reese, Cohen Wright, John Wilhelm and the Masons of A. M. Wolihin Lodge #132. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the funeral home. The family requests that any memorials be made to Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery, P.O.
