Roger McCommons Obituary

Roger Dutton “Deeta” McCommons, age 81, of Greensboro, GA died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Greene County “Deeta” was born April 13, 1923 to the late Roger Cecil McCommons and Dorothy Irene Dutton McCommons. In 1940 he graduated from Greensboro High School and attended Presbyterian College in South Carolina on a full football scholarship. In March of 1942, he left college to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He served throughout the European Theatre and landed at Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, with the First Army and fought in battles at Normandy and Cherbourg in France. He later transferred to the Third Army under General George S. Patton where he stayed until the war ended in May of 1945. When he returned from the war he was a rural mail carrier for the Greensboro Post Office for 39 years, retiring in 1984. After retiring he worked with Bill Corry as a surveyor. He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Greensboro, VFW Adams Walker Post #4259 and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Carlene Brisendine McCommons of Greensboro, GA; a daughter, Rosalyn “Winkle” Shrader and husband Robert of Oxford, GA; two sons, Roger “Roddy” McCommons and wife Barbara of Dallas, GA and Ross “Red Hoss” McCommons and wife Beth of Greensboro, GA; a brother, Robert McCommons of Tampa, FL; ten grandchildren, Amy Pritchett and husband Mike, Christi McCain, Danny McCain, Jeremy McCain, Katie McCain, Shaun McCommons, Amber McCommons, Robert Shrader and Christopher Shrader; a great granddaughter, Gwendolyn Pritchett and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Dr. Norman Waldrip and Rev. Terry Duvall officiating. Interment will follow in Greensboro City Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers are Daniel McCain, Jeremy McCain, Shaun McCommons, Robert Shrader Jr., Christopher Shrader and Matthew Yearwood. Honorary pallbearers are Win Corry, Wynn Copelan, Ralph Simons, Harold Glass, John Cawthon, Roger West, Bill Adams, Dave Conley, Bobby Durham, Jim Temple and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The family requests that any memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 or Nathanael Greene Academy, P. O. Box 109, Siloam, GA 30669. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
