Robert James “Bob” Kelly, age 69, of White Plains, Georgia, died on Thursday, March 2, 2006 while in Suzhou, China. Son of the late Francis Lloyd Kelly and Irene Carpenter Kelly, Bob was born on September 24, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Dubuque High School in Iowa, Tulane University and Iowa State University where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked at Union Camp in Savannah for 20 years and in 1978 he became Vice President of Sales for Asten Johnson. He was a successful international businessman who traveled worldwide. He was a loving father and husband, devoted to his grandchildren, and an avid University of Georgia fan.
The Kellys moved to Greene County in 1988. After retiring from Asten Johnson, Bob continued as a consultant. He was a member of The Hibernian Society in Savannah, the SAPIS Society, and Liberty United Methodist Church.
Bob is survived by his wife, Janet Warren Kelly of White Plains, GA; a daughter, Ann M. Kelly and husband Tim Flake of Tucker, GA; two sons, Robert W. Kelly of Atlanta, GA and Steven Kelly and wife Geri of Alpharetta, GA; two sisters, Cindy Furda and husband David of Brainerd, MN and Linda Hoffmann and husband Kenneth of Mound, MN; five grandchildren, Kaiti Kelly, Jessi Kelly, Jamie Chandler Kelly, Ashley Chandler Kelly and Jack Kelly; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Petterson.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Liberty United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Nicholas officiating. Visitors will be received afterward at the family’s home.
