Richard Doster "Ricky" Newsom, Jr.

Richard Doster “Ricky” Newsom, Jr. age 54, of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at his home surrounded by loved ones.  Ricky was born in Greensboro, GA on May 2, 1965 to his beloved parents Nancy Jo Dowdy Newsom of Union Point, Georgia and the late Richard Doster Newsom, Sr. 

Ricky grew up in Union Point, Georgia.  He graduated from Nathanael Greene Academy in 1983 and continued his education at the University of Georgia.  He received a Bachelor’s degree in Finance in 1988.  Upon graduation, Ricky sought employment with the Department of Transportation (DOT) where he worked for twelve years.  Following his employment with the DOT, he earned his stock broker’s license and became an investment advisor.  Ricky found his passion and secured lifetime friends working at Wells Fargo Advisors in Greensboro as Vice-President of Investments. 

While known for his community involvement, Ricky was a leader in all realms of his life.  He dedicated himself to the betterment of others through his active roles in the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, First Baptist Church of Union Point, and most importantly all the lives of his family and friends.  Ricky could brighten a room with a contagious smile, a humorous story, and/or an animated “Go Dawgs!”

In addition to his wife, Becky Newsom, and mother, Nancy Dowdy Newsom, he is survived by a sister, Sally Adams (Stacy);  bonus sister Cindy Moore (Larry); bonus daughters, Kim Leach (Russell), Kelly Coleman (Allen) and Shelly Coleman (Grant); grandchildren Morgan Leach, Bailey and William Coleman, and Walyn and Landon Coleman; nephew Lucas Moore; other relatives and many, many friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Doster Newsom, Sr., his brother, Joel Lam Newsom, and his beloved dog, Maggie.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Union Point, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Dr. Robert L. Whitmire officiating. Interment will follow at Wisteria Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Mark Lipscomb, Jimmy Waters, Tim Mackey, David Mackey, Larry Moore, Lucas Moore, Dr. Grant Carlson, Tim Horne and Dee Lindsey. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at Callaway Funeral Home in Union Point, GA.
