Richard (Dick) Stanton McGovern, 75, of Greensboro died Tuesday July 5, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospice, Athens, GA.
Dick was born July 29, 1940 in Baltimore, MD to the late James O. and Ruth Stanton McGovern. He grew up in Catonsville, Maryland and graduated from St. Agnus Grade School and Catonsville High School. He later attended and received a bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Baltimore. He and Judith Ann Ford were married on September 25, 1965, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Catonsville, MD, by his cousin Cardinal J. Francis Stafford. He retired from his sales position with U S Gypsum in 1997. They moved to Greensboro, where they were active members of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church and the Lake Oconee Elks Lodge.
Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife Judy on February 18, 2012. He is survived by his daughter Kendall Ford McGovern of Madison, GA, and his son James O. McGovern, IV (Melissa) of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, Gabriel, Kayla, Nicholas, and Alaina; two brothers, Monsignor James O. McGovern, III of Eldersburg, Maryland and Lawrence Thomas McGovern, of Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project through Lake Oconee Elks Lodge.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, Greensboro, GA at 10:00 am on Friday, July 8, 2016 with Monsignor James O. McGovern, III officiating. A reception will be held at 3:00 pm that afternoon at Lake Oconee Elks Lodge, 1116 Greensboro Road, Eatonton, GA 31024. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
