Pamela Lynn Porter McConnell , age 74, of Greensboro, GA died on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Landmark Hospital in Athens, Georgia. Pamela was born September 5, 1933 in Cook County, Illinois to the late George James Porter and Georgia May Jolly Porter. She graduated from South Shore High School and the University of Illinois and began her teaching career in Chicago and later Indianapolis, where she met and married her husband Robert Joel McConnell in 1960. After relocating to Atlanta in 1966 Pamela resumed her teaching career in Georgia at Cascade Middle School. Another relocation found her teaching at Parkway Middle School in New Jersey. Pamela and family returned to Georgia teaching at Conyers Middle School while also earning her Master''s in education from Georgia State University in Atlanta. She retired after thirty years of service.
An avid athlete, Pamela was a fast pitch softball coach for little league through high school ages for over a decade a€" highlights include the 1981 Heritage High School State AAA Champs and Conyers Middle School 1985 undefeated season. Pamela volunteered her time for several causes such as various positions in little league organizations and after retirement was very active in her local women''s golf association at Port Armor. In 1992 the family moved to Greene County where she lived for the last sixteen years. Throughout her life she was a teacher, mentor, friend, beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Joel McConnell of Greensboro, GA; two daughters, Melinda J. McConnell and husband William Greenberg of Leavenworth, KS and Melissa M. Miller and husband Thomas of Marvin, NC; a son, Michael Joel McConnell and wife Angela of Brentwood, TN; two sisters, Nancy Perrin of Chicago, IL and Johanna Foster and husband Ron of Greensboro, GA; six grandchildren, J. E. B. Greenberg, Grant Greenberg, Madison Miller, Taylor Miller, Carson McConnell and Andie McConnell; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at Reynolds Landing Club House with Rev. Boyd Dennard officiating. A reception will be held after the service.
