Mildred Jernigan Burke, age 89, of Greensboro, GA, died Friday, January 1, 2010 at Boswell Parker Nursing Center in Greensboro. She was a native of Rowland, North Carolina, but had lived in Greene County most of her life. Born on July 31, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Lyde Miller Jernigan and Lena Gainey Jernigan. She graduated from Vidette, Georgia High School and in 1941 married Roy Franklin Burke Sr in Burke County. They moved to Due West, South Carolina, where Mr. Burke finished his education. His first principal and teaching job was in Siloam, Georgia and later in Greensboro where she has lived ever since. Mildred worked with Hazel Turner at McDonald''s Dress Shop in Greensboro and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Franklin Burke Sr. on December 26, 1958; a daughter, Sue Burke Rayburn in June of 2008; a son, Roy Franklin Burke, Jr. on August 23, 2000; a great grandson, Dustin Newsome; and siblings, Margaret Mabry, Alton Jernigan and Sonny Jernigan who was killed in World War II, while serving in the United States Navy. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Burke Epps of Greensboro, GA; a sister, Clara J. Jackson of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, John Jernigan of Norfolk, VA and Bill Jernigan of South Hill, VA; nine grandchildren, Justin Epps and wife Rebecca, April Burke, Robbie Burke, Richie Burke, Benjamin Burke, James Burke, Ken Rayburn Jr. and wife Valerie, Jennie Rayburn and Laura Marht; fifteen great grandchildren, Lanie Epps Pentecost, Tristan Epps, Richard Burton, Ellisa Burke, Brittany Burke, Jo Burke, Samantha Burke, Christopher Burke, Javen Burke, Cloe Burke, MacKenzie Burke, Katie Burke, Jacob Burke, Donavon Burke and Kayla Rayburn; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Dr. James Choomack and Rev. Stephen Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Justin Epps, Ken Rayburn Jr., James Burke, Paul Hughes, Paul Hughes Jr. and Richard Burton.
