Mary Callaway Thaxton Pittman

Mary Callaway Thaxton Pittman, age 91, of Union Point, GA died Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Rockdale Medical Center in Conyers, GA. Mary was born on November 23, 1924, in Washington, Georgia, one of thirteen children and the daughter of the late Robert Thomas Callaway and Nellie Carlton Callaway. She grew up and attended school in Washington, GA.  In 1945 she moved from Wilkes County to Union Point where she worked for Chipman Union as a looper for thirty-three years.  As an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point, she held numerous positions on different committees. Over the years she cared for  many of the elderly in the community allowing them to stay in their homes. She enjoyed sewing on plastic canvases, crocheting, quilting and working sudoku puzzles.

She is survived by a daughter, Janice Moon of Conyers, GA; a son, Douglas Thaxton of Augusta, GA; three granddaughters, Amy Mayo, Jennifer Moon and Brenda Moon; siblings, Ella Nell Mines of Union Point, GA, Ellie Jones of Lincolnton, GA, Evelyn Bridges of Sandy Cross, GA and Otis Callaway of Washington, GA.  In addition to her parents and a son, Gerald Thaxton, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Rachel Johnson, Rollin Callaway, Herbert Callaway, Orlando Callaway, Priscilla Nunn, Vera Jones, Lila Mae Swanson and Shelby Callaway.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Callaway Chapel, 208 N. Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Marc Lhowe officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are: Ricky Callaway, Brian Callaway, Tommy Swann, Ricky Newsom, Dee Lindsey, Eric Jacoby and Gene Lindsey. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016 at Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N.
