Mary Marchman Overton, 86, of Greensboro, Georgia went home to heaven on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. A native of Greene County, Mary was born on March 14, 1923 to the late William Hart Marchman and Mildred Smith Marchman. As a child, she attended elementary school in White Plains then graduated from Greensboro High School. As a young woman she moved to Macon and worked for Fickling and Walker, Inc. assigning civilian and military personnel to rental houses and apartments in Warner Robbins.
In 1951 Mary married Mac Overton from Union Point, Georgia. They moved around the southeast with his company, IBM, before finally settling in Atlanta where they raised their family. They were so thankful to move back to their beloved Greene County upon retirement. She enjoyed living in her log cabin on Lake Oconee.
Mary never met a stranger. She had a genuine love for people and quickly became involved in the community through the Lake Oconee Newcomers Club, Beaver Dam Homeowners Association, and delivering Meals on Wheels. She was also an active member of Walker United Methodist Church. She had a heart for those that were no longer able to attend church so Mary ministered to them with regular visits delivering programs from the Sunday services. She also enjoyed serving others through the ministry of the United Methodist Women''s Organization and the welcome committee. Mary seemed happiest when serving people. Her kindness and thoughtfulness were a blessing.
Mary''s family and friends will remember her with love. She is survived by her daughters Lynn Overton of Atlanta, GA and Beth Overton Mobley and husband Vernon of Augusta, GA; her son William McDurmond "Bill" Overton, Jr. of Greensboro, GA; three grandchildren, Matt Mobley and wife Jen of Savannah, GA, Melissa Mobley Jordan and husband Daniel of Augusta, GA and Mark Mobley of Augusta, GA.
