Mary Meeks Meadows

Mary Meeks Meadows, died Monday, February 1, 2016, at her residence in Union Point surrounded by her loved ones.  She was 96 years old.  She was born on May 17, 1919 in the Veazey Community, to the late William Claude Meeks of Denton, Texas and Trancey B. Victoria Herrington Meeks of Duluth, GA.  She was in the class of 1936 at Union Point High School. She held a degree as a Master Seamstress and Textile Artist.  On October 7, 1939, she married Harold Milton Meadows, Sr. at the Wesley Chapel Parsonage with Rev. Ella Roof Graham as officiant. During WWII, while living in Charleston, SC, she was a member of the Civil Service Auxiliary serving in numerous capacities. Her career began at Union Manufacturing in Union Point, where she worked as a looper for 15 years. She retired in 1995 from the rental business that she and her husband built together. From 1919 until 1939 she was a member of Wesley Chapel. In 1940, she transferred her membership and was baptized by Rev. E. H Campbell into the fellowship of Union Point First Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death. Mary was actively involved in her church as a preschool Sunday School teacher, Acteens Leader, GA’s, VBS assistant for 40 years. She was a member of WMU, Sunday School, BTU and helped start the Van McAlpin Mission Action Group.  Mary was also active in several community and parent organizations including: Meals on Wheels, Chappell Lodge #511 Auxiliary, grade mother and grandparents club for Union Point Elementary, Union Point High School, Nathanael Greene Academy, and Greene County High School. She also volunteered at the local hospital and nursing home. Most of all, Mary loved God and her family, and she continues to be famous for her sausage biscuits.

She is survived by her son, Harold Milton Meadows, Jr. (Nita) of Union Point, GA, and a daughter, Susan Higdon (Mark) of Greensboro, GA, Grandchildren: David Meadows, Julie Davenport (Darren), Doug Higdon (Kim), Leigh Lovett (Mark), Mary Helen Brewer (Nick), and Luke Higdon, Great Grandchildren: Chassie and Tori Davenport, J.D. and Laura Beth Higdon, Will Lovett, Grayson and Bowen Brewer, Step-Sister, Jean Sorrow Richardson of California, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, close friends and her wonderful caregivers. In addition to her parents and her husband Harold Meadows, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Natalie Meadows; stepmother, Willie Mae Sorrow Meeks; and siblings, Johnnie Coleman Meeks, Sr., Virgil Meeks, Frank Meeks, Ruben Meeks, Nellie Garner, Marie Allen and Ella Ruth Burt.

Funeral Services will be held, Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Union Point First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Marc Lhowe officiating.  Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669.  The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service at the Union Point First Baptist Church.  Serving as pallbearers are grandsons: David Meadows, Darren Davenport, Doug Higdon, JD Higdon, Luke Higdon, Mark Lovett and Nick Brewer.  Memorials in memory of Mary may be made to NGA, P O Box 109, Siloam, GA 30665, the Union Point First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 or Shiloh Baptist Church, 3400 Penfield Road, Greensboro, GA 30642.  Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N.
