Mary Jean Holmes Ashley

Mary Jean Holmes Ashley, died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at her residence in Greensboro, Georgia. She was 82. Mrs. Ashley was born in Wayne County, Michigan on January 6, 1927. She was the daughter of Florence Gunter Holmes and Eric Holmes, who moved their family to Union Point, Georgia in 1929, where she graduated from Union Point High School. She attended LaGrange College, and then met and married William Seaborn Ashley, Sr. on September 8, 1946. They were married 62 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, where she taught Sunday School and served in many departments in the church. Mrs. Ashley was actively involved in the planning and construction of the church''s second campus on Lake Oconee. She was an avid volunteer in Greene County, and was honored with the Greene County Volunteer of the Year award in 1985. Above all, she dedicated her entire life to her family and friends, whom she loved so dearly.

Mrs. Ashley is survived by her husband, William Seaborn Ashley, Sr.; her son, Eric Holmes Ashley of Watkinsville, GA; four grandchildren, Gregory Seaborn and Laura Huffman Ashley of Atlanta, GA, Mary Joy, Lisa and Erica Ashley all of Athens, GA; one great grandchild, William Seaborn Ashley, III; two brothers, Paul and Gwen Holmes of Athens, GA, Eric and Marion Holmes of Duluth, GA; Joe and Pat Whittemore of Hartwell, GA, Freddie Whittemore of Hollywood, FL, and Charles and Debbie Whittemore of Athens, GA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, William Seaborn Ashley, Jr.; her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Seaborn and Dana Ashley; and her sister-in-law, Caroline Ashley.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Harold Reynolds, Jamie Reynolds, Dick Schmidt, Mickey Channell, Lewis Brown, Stanley Brown, Mickey Fountain and Mike Fitzgerald. Honorary pallbearers are Chad Whittemore, Johnny Frantz, Ken Hyatt, Jon Whittemore, Pat Manese, Andrew Holmes, Steve Vermillion and Melvin Charles. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
