Mary Anna Stewart Torbert

Mary Anna Stewart Torbert, age 80, of Athens, GA, formerly of Greensboro, GA died Saturday, March 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA. Born in Taliaferro County on January 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Sammie N. Stewart and Gladys Morgan Stewart.  In 1952 she graduated from Greensboro High School and attended Berry College.  For twenty-six years she worked as the clerk for the City of Greensboro retiring January 26, 1999.  Mrs. Torbert was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and a member of the Amicus Sunday School Class. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whose greatest joys were being with her family and friends.

Mary Anna was preceded in death by her husband Robert Jackson “Bobby” Torbert in July of 1986; son Stewart W. Torbert; and a brother, Royce Stewart.  She is survived by a daughter, Janet Alligood (Jeff) of Bishop, GA; son Glenn Torbert (Patricia) of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren, Brian Alligood (Courtney), Christina Stephens (Joe), Katie Torbert, Jamie Torbert (Taylor), great grandchildren Madison and Collin Alligood and “almost” daughter and granddaughter Marty Nipper Sirmans and Sarah Beth McMillan.   

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Dr. Norman Waldrip and Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642. Serving as pallbearers are David Strickland, Bobby Voyles, Jeff Dowdy, Evan Duvall, Chris Bragg and Andy Marchman.  Honorary pallbearers are members of the Amicus Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service. The family requests that any memorials be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund (Kitchen), 203 S.
