Martha Stephens Hunter, age 88, of Greensboro, GA died Wednesday November 18, 2009 at Willow Run Retirement Home. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on May 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Celestine Stephens and Laura Jane Templeton Stephens. She graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in Pennsylvania and graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. During World War II, she entered as a nurse in the Air Corps where she received her basic training in Drewfield, Florida. She then transferred to Asheville, South Carolina where she left the Air Corps and entered the Army. She went to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia and then to Camp Rucker in Alabama where she met Fred Hunter, Sr. She was stationed in New Jersey and then travelled on the 1st Queen Elizabeth to Europe where she lived in a convent in Fleetwood, England. After the war, she moved to Greensboro with her husband Fred Hunter, Sr. Until her declining health, Martha was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. J. Fred Hunter Sr. in 2003; and siblings, Margaret Stephens Cumming, Agnes Stephens Stosel, Celestine Stephens and William Stephens. She is survived by a son, John Fred Hunter Jr. and wife Nancy of Greensboro, GA; a daughter, Lauralee Hunter of Athens, GA.; six grandchildren, Jennifer Hannay and husband Scott, April Ecker and husband Brian, John Higdon and wife Paula, Melody Hunter, John Hunter, Crisara Hunt and husband Marc; eight great grandchildren; Matthew Hannay, William Hannay, Hunter Ecker, Abraham Hunter, Aiden Ecker, Isis Hunter, Ben Higdon and Clyde Higdon; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, Georgia 30642 with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Burial will follow in Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Cotton Boswell, Lee Robbins, Ken Cawthon, Don Ellis, Gentry Strickland, Tommy Chillemi and Dan Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. W.H. Rhodes Jr., David Thornton, Charles Andrews, Scott Baynes and Larry Smith The family requests that any memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at the Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
